In a method of sinking bores in subterranean rock formations while extracting drilled cores as rock samples, main borehole sections of main borehole diameter or core borehole sections in each case starting from the bottom of a main borehole section and of a core borehole diameter reduced relative to the main borehole diameter are alternately bored in succession - the main borehole sections with a main boring tool and the core borehole sections with a core boring tool. Here, the main borehole sections follow a course independent of a course of core borehole sections drilled beforehand in each case, a directional boring tool with solid rotary boring bit is used as the main boring tool, and for core boring work the main boring tool is exchanged for a separate core boring tool.
