A reagent is applied to a finely-divided solid material by forming a pulp of the material in a first liquid and contacting the pulp with the reagent under conditions characterized by a high degree of kinetic energy, while the reagent is in the form of a dispersion of droplets which are initially immiscible with the first liquid. The method may be used for the application of reagents prior to flotation, for the treatment of magnetite with sodium silicate prior to magnetic separation and for the treatment of a material with leach liquor. The high energy condition may be produced in the contacting zone by mechanical agitation, e.g. as shown in Fig. 1, in which a conditioning tank has a rotating impeller 11 and is provided with nozzles 16 to which reagent and air are supplied by lines 17 and 18 respectively. Contacting may also be effected in the throat of a Venturi tube, in a straight walled tube or in the launder and/or drum of a wet ball mill. Alternatively, or additionally, the high energy condition may be produced by heat, pressure, ultrasonic vibrations or high-frequency electrostatic and electromagnetic fields. Fig. 9 shows a unit suitable for the treatment of a pulp with a leach liquid. The pulp in the inlet duct 92 is agitated by ultrasonic generators 95 and a dispersion of leach liquor is supplied through nozzles 96. Generators 99 for ultrasonic or high frequency electrostatic or electromagnetic pulses are placed around the expansion chamber 94.</p>
