PURPOSE:To realize a secondary battery with a high energy density and a long cycle life which is capable of rapid charge and discharge by using determined battery active materials and determined combination thereof, and also using a determined nonaqueous electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode has a sodium/cobalt oxide as the main component. A negative electrode consists of a sodium alloy, a carbon material, and a binding agent. An nonaqueous electrolyte consists of a sodium salt and an ether compound. The negative electrode is formed of 80wt.% or more of an alloy of sodium and lead and/or tin, 3-20wt.% of carbon black and/or black lead, and 1-8wt.% of a binding agent of olefin copolymer rubber. The positive electrode is formed of a sodium/cobalt oxide having an atomic ratio of sodium to cobalt within a specified range and containing 70% or more of gamma, type crystal structure. The electrolyte is a mixture of NaPF6 or NaBF4, with one or two or more ether compounds represented by the shown general formula. |
