PURPOSE: To completely automate a wire lead insertion device by providing a clamp means capable of releasing a lead insertion means, an adjustable control means to actuate an insertion jaw, and a sensing means to detect when a forward chip is applied to a terminal. CONSTITUTION: An insertion station 42 in which a wire lead 22 is inserted into a terminal receiving hollow 20 in a multi-circuit connector housing 12 is provided, where mutually perpendicular axes X, Y, Z cross each other. A lead conveyor 44 is provided with a clamp means to hold the lead 22 from a crimp-style terminal to be capable of releasing it. A insertion jaw assembly 54 on a lead pickup station 46 is provided with an insertion jaw to surround the lead 22 along its length for holding it under pressure, and a drive means to let the lead insertion jaw advance to the station 42 along the Y-axis. A proximity sensor is provided close to a terminal guide jaw assembly 56, and a relative position of the assembly 54 along a wire section 24 to back ends of an insulation-coated application part 32 and the assembly 56 on the back of a terminal 26 is detected. This series of action can be performed by control of a system controller 104. |
