<p>PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal element which is free from a color variation caused by temperature, can be manufactured easily, and whose response speed is high by constituting the liquid crystal element so that one of two bistable liquid crystal orientation directions at the time of applying a voltage is parallel to each other by both liquid crystal cells, and also, the other is intersected orthogonally with each other by both the liquid crystal cells. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal element consists of a structure laminating two layers of guest-host type ferroelectric liquid crystal cells. Liquid crystal molecules of liquid crystal layers 15, 25 are oriented roughly horizontally against substrates 11, 21a, 21b and 31 by oriented films 14, 24a, 24b and 34, oriented and deformed by a voltage applied to transparent electrodes 13, 23a, 23b and 33 provided on the inside surfaces of these substrates 11, 21a, 21b and 31, and bistabilized by a direction of a given electric field. In this case, one bistable orientation direction A1 in a first liquid crystal cell is allowed to become parallel to one bistable orientation direction in a second liquid crystal cell, and also, the other bistable orientation direction B1 in the first cell and the other bistable orientation direction B2 in the second cell are regulated so as to become roughly vertical to each other. In such a way, a color variation caused by the temperature is not generated, response speed is accelerated, and the productivity is improved.</p> |
