PURPOSE:To obtain a nonlinear optical material having an improved mechanical strength and workability by adopting a high molecular liquid crystalline compd. having a center of chirality as a host high molecular liquid crystalline compd., and allowing the host high molecular liquid crystalline compd. and a guest org. compd. having a high nonlinearity and large polarizability to dissolve unformly in each other. CONSTITUTION:A nonlinear optical element contg. a high molecular liquid crystalline compd. having a center of chirality and a guest nonlinear optical compd. exhibits high nonlinearity as a whole of the material depending on the nonlinearity of the guest compd. A nonlinear optical element having a position formed by orienting said nonlinear optical material is easily preparable and exhibits superior characteristics. Suitable high molecular liquid crystalline compds. having a center of chirality are branched high molecular ones or those having a principal chain, etc. Preferred guest org. compds. having nonlinear optical characteristics are those having 10X10<-30> esu secondary molecular nonlinear susceptibility. Thus, a solid soln. having superior mechanical strength and superior workability in spite of its large content of guest compd. is obtd. |
