The present invention relates to an erodible polymeric composition comprising an organic and/or inorganic iodine compound which is solid at room temperature, non toxic, water-soluble and which does not inhibit the cure catalyst. The hydrolysable polymer is chosen from a polylactic, a polyglycolic and a lactic/glycolic copolymer of molecular weight of between 10,000 and 800,000 or mixtures thereof. The compositions can be employed for water treatment with continuous and controlled release of iodine for the treatment and eradication of diseases due to an iodine deficiency.
