At least one of core, lower refractive index cladding, and opt. stress element integrally fused to cladding, is formed from glass with compsn. (mole %) 3-20 MgO, 3-42 Al2O3 and 45-94 SiO2 and having coefft. of expansion (0-300 C) 6-50 X 10-7/≰C and refractive index 1.46-1.58. Manufacture is typically by CVD method using SiCl and volatile beta-diketonates of Al and Mg. The compsn. can be adjusted to form glasses with different refractive indices and same expansion or with same indices and different expansions.
