A method for combating arachnida which comprises applying to arachnida and/or to a habitat thereof an effective pest combating amount of at least one derivative of a 2,3-diaminomaleonitrile of the formula <IMAGE> (I) in which X represents hydrogen, halogen, halogenoalkyl or CN, R1, R2, R3 and R4 are defined or different and represent hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, CN, NO2, dialkylamino, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylthio, alkylthionyl, alkylsulphonyl, OH, SH or NH2, wherein R1 and Rb together represent the radical (II) <IMAGE> (II) in which Y represents hydrogen, halogen, halogenoalkyl or CN, R5, R6, R7 and R8 are identical or different and represent hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, CN, NO2, dialkylamino, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylthio, alkylthionyl, alkylsulphonyl, OH, SH or NH2, and in which Rc and Rd together represent a chemical bond, or Ra and Rb together represent the radical (II), in which Y, R5, R6, R7 and R8 possess the meanings given above and in which Rc and Rd in each case represent hydrogen, or Ra, Rb, Rc and Rd in each case represent hydrogen, or Ra represents hydrogen and Rb represents the radical (II) in which Y, R5, R6, R7 and R8 possess the meanings given above and Rc and Rd represent hydrogen.
