In order to increase the power and efficiency of each standard element of an internal combustion engine, so that one piston stroke is not wasted on the charge cycle as in a four-stroke engine, a second piston 1.1, which is fixed to a cage comprising rod-like elements 2, is fitted on that side facing the valves 6, 7, the said elements passing through the first piston 1 and being held by longitudinal guides 5, and being fixed in a component 22 on that side of the crankshaft 14 remote from the cylinders and the said component being rotatably/displaceably connected by a pin 20 to a one-armed rocker 3 - which on the other side is pivotably supported in the crankcase 21 -, so that the one-arm rocker, driven by throttle control shafts 4, controls the movement of the second piston 1.1 and thereby the charge cycle during each revolution of the crankshaft. <IMAGE>
