The object is to design a tensioning device (10) for belts, chains or the like in such a way that it can be used universally even in the presence of the widest possible variety of installation space conditions and in the application of tensioning forces of different magnitude. To achieve the object, a tensioning pulley (18) is mounted on a supporting arm (14) which can be moved into various positions relative to a tensioning arm (12) connected to a tensioning element (16). The adjustability of the supporting arm (14) and the tensioning arm (12) relative to one another is achieved by means of a journal connection (20) comprising a polygonal journal (28).
