The invention relates to a measuring instrument for recording gravitational fields, having a member which can incline horizontally and whose centre of gravity (mass) rests in unstable equilibrium perpendicularly above its supporting surface on a bearing surface, and which is largely prevented with a retaining force reduced to a minimum from deflecting from the perpendicular - controlled by a measuring arrangement. The deflection movement or the retaining force opposing it is evaluated as a measure of the external influence on the system due to gravity.
