The method and the apparatus are suitable for testing a slip-gauge 4'' against a standard slip-gauge 4, both disposed on a plane table 1. The slip-gauges are moved between probes 3 by way of a manipulator, comprising a lever 13, swivel joint 8 and clamp 6. The method comprises a sequence of events commencing with the unlocking and release of the manipulator wherein the slip-gauges are clamped and lifted by lifting system 14. The manipulator is then moved to individual positions, and the above procedure is repeated in reverse order so that the slip-gauges are again placed on the table for measurement. Gauge readings are fed to a computer, which may also control the method sequence. <IMAGE>
