In meshed (networked) satellite communications systems in which every earth station can work with every other earth station, very different earth stations, i.e., for example, large radio stations and mobile earth stations, are often used. In order to safeguard transmission, maximum power has hitherto been transmitted according to the prior art from the respective transmitting earth station to the satellite for each connection between earth stations. In the case of a multiplicity of RF carriers, comparatively high intermodulation noise is produced, because the satellite transponder is then being operated close to its saturation point. According to the invention, the transmission power of the earth stations is set according to the antenna diameter of the respective receiving earth stations in order to reduce the transponder transmission power. <IMAGE>
