Production of cold rolled metastable austenitic stainless steel of AISI301 or AISI201 type, sheet or strip, comprises casting, hot rolling into strip or sheet, annealing and pickling, cold rolling, annealing and optionally pickling and finally temper rolling. The sheet or strip is mechanically polished after or before the temper rolling, and the polishing is carried out by belt polishing, and the strip is hard tempered. The process produces stainless steel with good corrosion resistance, high strength and improved fatigue resistance and which is useful in manufacturing of railroad vehicles. |
