The tower 21, Fig. 1, of a crane is supported on floors 27, 29 of a building by frames 30, 31 which carry pawls 37, Fig. 2. Two such pawls are provided at each corner of the tower and engage holes 43 therein. The pawls are pivoted at 38 to members 34, which are pivoted to the supporting frames, and are urged into contact with holes 43 by spring loaded plungers 39. Thrust screws 40 adjust the position of the members 34, and clamp the tower after each climbing movement. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, the tower causes ratchets 57 engaged by a pawl 56 which is pivoted to the supporting frame at 54. A coil spring 55 holds the pawl against the ratchet and a screw 59 limits outward movement of the lower end of the pawl. The pawls may engage cut-out portions of the tower, Fig. 6, br raised abutments, Fig. 8.
