METHOD OF FUSION SPLICING OPTICAL FIBERS

A method for improving the centering of the cores of a pair of single mode optical fibers in preparation of the fusion splicing of the fibers through a pair of discharge electordes which apply a discharge power sufficient for bonding the end faces of the fibers to each other, the method comprising the steps of aligning the pair of single mode optical fibers so that the end faces thereof face each other, centering the cores of the optical fibers while monitoring the cores; characterized by further comprising a step carried out between the aligning step and the centering step.
