<p>New steroids possessing aromatase-inhibiting activity are of formula (I> <IMAGE> wherein the symbol ---- represents a single or a double bond; R is hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl, a hydroxy-protecting group, or -CO-R4 where R4 is (a) hydrogen; (b) C1-C22 alkyl unsubstituted or substituted by carboxy, C4-C7 cycloalkyl, heterocyclyl or phenyl; or (c) phenyl, unsubstituted or substituted by C1-C4 alkyl, trifluoromethyl, halogen or C1-C4 alkoxy; or R is -SO2-R5 where R5 is C1-C6 alkyl or phenyl, the phenyl ring being unsubstituted or substituted by C1-C4 alkyl; one of R1 and R2 is hydrogen and the other is C1-C6 alkyl, C2-C6 alkenyl, C2-C6 alkynyl, or phenyl, the phenyl ring being unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, hydroxy, <IMAGE> (in which each of R6 and R7 is hydrogen or C1-C6 alkyl), or <IMAGE> where n is 1 to 6 and each of R8 and R9 is hydrogen or C1-C6 alkyl, or NR8R9 is a heterocyclic ring; and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.</p> |
