A packing machine having a sealing unit (14) is designed to form a packing container for liq. or semi-liq. foodstuffs. A radially movable holder (18) of the sealing unit has a peripheral seal lip (24) which rests against the inside of a downwardly moving tube (8) formed from a material web. The seal which seals the tube lower part from its uper open end, includes a sealing surface (22) against which the holder is pressed. The holder and sealing surface are pressed together by a pressurized gas supplied through a hole in the holder to the tube lower part. Such contact is effected against the effect of downwardly directed forces on the sealer and holder.
