PURPOSE:To obtain pyruvic acid from inexpensive raw materials in high selectivity, in high yield and inexpensively by using a platinum catalyst containing a specific metallic component, maintaining the reaction solution in a pH of weak alkalinity and reacting propylene glycol with molecular O2 in an aqueous solution. CONSTITUTION:0.5-30wt.% propylene glycol is reacted with molecular O2 in an aqueous solution in the presence of a platinum catalyst prepared by supporting a metallic component selected from Pb, Ti, and Cd on a carrier such as active carbon at 50-80 deg.C for 2-10 hours under normal pressure of 20kg/ cm<2>G of O2 pressure by successively adding an aqueous solution of an alkali substance such as NaOH to maintain the reaction solution at pH 7-9 and pyruvic acid useful as a synthetic raw material for various kinds of preformed chemical mediators is obtained. The catalyst supported on the carrier, for example, in the case of Pt-Pb system, is obtained by immersing platinum supported catalyst such as Pt/carbon sold on the market in a water-soluble compound of lead such as lead nitrate. |
