PURPOSE:To obtain high quality sheet molding compound (SMC) having favorable impregnation feature by a method wherein SMC in working cycle is passed through a large number of impregnating rolls, which are arranged in zigzags to the running direction of the SMC in working cycle. CONSTITUTION:SMC in working cycle B, which is produced by interposing upper and lower pastes 6 and 5 and cut fibers 10 between the opposed surfaces of an upper and a lower band-like films consisting of both the sides of the SMC, is fed in an impregnating region A for impregnating with the pastes 5 and 6 and, after being passed through a large number of impregnating rolls 11, wound up by a winder 13. In the impregnating region A, a large number of the impregnating rolls are arranged alternately in zigzag or staggered manner in two horizontal planes, which are vertically apart from each other, to the direction of running of the SMC in working cycle B. Since the SMC in working cycle B running through the impregnating rolls 11 comes into contact with each impregnating roll 11 along the circumferential surface, which extends over at least nearly 1/2 of its total circumference and further is applied by a certain tension, which is uniform widthwise. The forcing of the pastes 5 and 6 out of between the upper and lower films 1 and 2, the uneven distribution of the glass fibers and the like are effectively prevented from occurring. |
