<p>While rising in an inclined channel, chopped pieces of sugar beet have the sugar continuously removed as syrup by a counterflouring descending stream of water. Upwards beet feed so provided by right hand and left hand rotating shafts (2, 3) passing through aligned channel sections and interconnected at each transition. The helical worm members on the shafts are formed as strips (5) with the periphery of each turn including a number, eg. four, of sudden directional jumps (6) caused by passage over the support arms (7) to which the strips are affixed.
