<p>Napped fabrics of fibres made of a polymer containing at least 80% by weight of polymerized acrylonitrile are impregnated with a solution of zinc fluoborate and then edged to prevent matting, pilling and shedding of the nap under normal laundering and wearing conditions. Prior to napping the fabric may be treated with a silicone resin and a polyamine resin, e.g. dimethylene triamine crosslinked with polyethylene glycol di-iodide or and epoxy resin. A silicone resin may also be applied to the napped fabric together with the zinc fluoborate. Aqueous solutions, which may be applied to the fabrics by padding or spraying, having a zinc fluoborate concentration of 0.35-10% by weight may be used and after treatment the fabrics may be heated for 5-15 minutes at a temperature of 240 DEG -300 DEG F. The softness of the treated fabrics may be improved by passing them through a cold calender. Suitable silicone resins are those of the formula <FORM:0984154/D1-D2/1> in which R is any monovalent hydrocarbon radical, any hydroxylated monovalent hydrocarbon radical or hydrogen and n is an integer of 1-3. Woven, non-woven or knitted fabrics made from fibres comprising polyacrylonitrile, copolymers of acrylonitrile with other monomers containing >C = C< linkages or blends of acrylonitrile polymers or copolymers having an overall acrylonitrile content of at 80% by weight may be treated. Suitable monomers containing >C = C< linkages are acrylic, a -chloroacrylic and methacrylic acids, methyl, ethyl, butyl, methoxymethyl and b -chloroethyl methacrylate, acrylate or a -chloroacrylates vinyl chloride, fluoride or bromide, vinylidene chloride, 1-chloro-1-bromo-ethylene, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, a -chloroacrylamide or mono-alkyl substitution products thereof, methylvinyl ketone, vinyl acetate, chloroacetate, propionate or stearate, N-vinyl phthalimide, N-vinyl-succinimide, itaconic acid and esters thereof, N-vinyl carbazole, vinyl furane, alkylvinyl esters, vinyl sulphonic acid, di-ethylcitraconate or mesaconate, styrene, vinyl-naphthalene, vinyl pyridines and 1-vinyl imidazole.</p> |
