PURPOSE:To obtain an electrode with a low overvoltage and a high responding speed fr an electrochromic display cell, etc. by binding acetylene black with a polymer binder and by bringing the bound body into electrical contact with a metal. CONSTITUTION:In an electrochemical cell having >=1 electrode and an electrolyte such as an electrochromic (EC) display element, the electrode 14 on a vapor- deposited gold film on the under substrate 15 is obtd. by binding acetylene black superior to graphite in respect of its higher liq. absorbing power with a polymer binder prepared by copolymerizing the monomer of a polymer soluble in the electrolytic soln. 12 with the monomer of a polymer insoluble in the soln. 12 in a suitable ratio, e.g., a copolymer of 80% vinyl acetate with 20% ethylene. The under substrate 15 is placed opposite to the upper glass substrate 9 having an EC film 11 of WO3 or the like on an ITO film 10 to obtain the ECD element. The electrode 14 has a low overvoltage, no carbon is dispersed in the electrolytic soln. 12, and the element acts like an ideal capacitor with large capacity and has a high responding speed. |
