<p>This invention relates to heterogeneous, pre-S rich hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) particles purified from mammalian cell culture medium, and to a method of purification that avoids harsh treatment. The HBsAg particles of the invention contain substantial amounts of both S, both pre-S1, and both pre-S2 components, and the particles can be used to produce a potent vaccine against type B hepatitis infections. The invention also relates to a transfected mammalian cell culture containing an expression vector and capable of producing the heterogeneous, pre-S rich particles of the invention.</p> |
