The apparatus for providing a complete airtight seal for higher CO gas recovery and being less likely to be impaired by splashed slag or metal comprises an annular flange (16) adjacent to a rim of the converter mouth, mounted just below the lower part of the skirt (2) and having a vertical external surface, and an annular sealing band for abutting the vertical surface and divided into segments, each pivotable on a separate horizontal pin (20) to swing to and from the surface. Each segment is connected to the piston rod of a separate hydraulic cylinder (18) so that they can be held under pressure against the surface.
