A method of exploring for diamonds by irradiating ground suspected of containing diamondiferous material, for example micro-diamonds, with laser radiation, preferably modulated or pulsed, from an airborne laser and detecting the resultant scattered Raman radiation characteristic of diamond by means of an airborne detector.
