In rolling a plastically deformable web of material, especially when hot-rolling metal strip, a prescribed thickness profile of the rolled web of material across the width of the web is achieved with greater accuracy, a higher control rate and a larger adjustment range by virtue of the fact that one roll (7) is designed as a bend adjustment roll controllable individually across the width of the web, and an opposing mating roll (8) is designed as a roll with a controllable effective camber. The measured thickness profile is subjected to a harmonic analysis with a fundamental wavelength corresponding to the width (L) of the web, the fundamental (a2) serving for the control of the effective camber of the mating roll (8) while higher-order waves (a3, a4) are used for the individual control of the supporting elements (13) of the bend adjustment roll (7). <IMAGE>
