In the case of video cassettes it is necessary that a check is kept on the number of plays. For this purpose, known video cassettes are provided with a counter which is advanced by one increment after each playing operation. In addition, known video cassettes have blocking devices which become effective after reaching a certain number of plays. According to the invention, the checking of video cassettes by means of very simple components is made possible by there being arranged in the cassette housing a movable component which can be moved out of a position of rest and causes the counter to be incremented each time the video casette (63) is introduced into the video recorder, and by a block which prevents further playing of the video cassette (63) being able to come into effect when a fixed value is reached in the counter. The magnetic tape cassette according to the invention has simple and easy-to-assemble components which ensure an indication which cannot be falsified of the plays of the magnetic tape and reliably make a block come into effect after a certain number of plays, in such a way that, for example in the case of video cassettes, the last play before the ultimate blocking of the video cassette still reproduces clear video recordings. <IMAGE>
