<p>Apparatus for machining workpieces with high-energy radiation, in particular with laser radiation, comprising an optical system focusing the radiation onto the workpiece and a device putting the area of interaction between the radiation and the workpiece under vacuum. To improve the manipulation of the workpiece, and in particular to be able to manipulate continuous workpieces or lengths of workpiece more easily, the apparatus is designed in such a way that the vacuum device has an opening producing a localised vacuum only in the machining area.</p>
