In the manufacture of magnetic record tape, the surface protecting layer is formed by the process in which :(A) carbon black is introduced into a vacuum vessel at 10-3-10-2 torr ; (B) the mixt. gas of F2 and N2 is poured in at a fixed pressure, heattreated at 200-400 ≦̸C, and then smoothly cooled to form fluoric graphite for spatterring ; (C) the fluoric graphite is spattered to the tape coated with C0-20 wt.% Ni 1500 A.
