The filler of a filter rod is formed by advancing a tow 1 of fibrous filter material for tobacco smoke through a duct 19 wherein the tow receives metered qualitities of granular filter material 12, such as charcoal. The granular material is drawn from a magazine by the peripheral pocket 13a of a rotor 13 which cooperates with an equalizing device 17 and discharges batches of metered quantities of granular filter material into the range of a rotating brush 18 serving to accelerate granular material to the speed of the tow and to deliver accelerated granular material into the duct 19 with a large component of movement in the direction of advancement of the tow. <IMAGE>
