The method at least includes providing rings having a predetermined non-circular profile, by the metal strip being first bent 4 to a uniform radius of curvature at least 2 per cent less than the minimum radius of curvature of a predetermined non-circular profile, then the curved strip being bent back 5 to increase the radii of curvature of all the constituent portions of the strip forming the ring to the desired values of the predetermined profile. First bending is by a fixed abutment 4 and the second bending is by a movable finger 5 operated by a computer-controlled eccentric via a lever.
