Seal arrangement for sealing between two opposite surfaces of the elements of a machine, provided in an open groove of one of the elements. The seal comprises at least one elastomeric expansion ring in the bottom of the groove, an intermediate ring of viscoelastic material with a sealing surface for making contact with the other element of the machine, and an elastomeric ring fitted into a separate groove in the sealing surface of the intermediate ring. The ends of the sealing surface have relatively sharp edges and, between these edges and the separate groove, are conical surfaces which leave a small partition angle. The seal arrangement provides improved distribution of the contact pressure and also effective hydrodynamic relief of the outer ring, preventing its exposure to harmful pressures and consequent damage. <IMAGE>
