Methods of treating diseases characterized by hyperexcitability of neurons

The invention provides methods of treating diseases characterized by hyperexcitability of neurons. An amount of a substituted pyrazinoylguanidine compound effective to regulate excitability of the neurons is administered. Substituted pyrazinoylguanidines having the formula <IMAGE> wherein R is halogen and R1 is a member of the group consisting of hydrogen, benzyl and optionally substituted benzyl are useful in the invention. The invention also discloses a method of treating neurons having hyperexcitable cell membranes.
