PURPOSE:To display the name of a region where a road exists by reading road data corresponding to a present position out of a first memory means, displaying said data, reading the names of the neighboring regions of the region of the displayed road data out of a second memory device, and displaying the names. CONSTITUTION:A position estimating means 1 adds the relative running distance of a vehicle that is detected with a bearing sensor and a distance sensor to an initial position which is inputted beforehand. Thus the present position of the vehicle is estimated. Road map data are stored in a broad-range mesh map-data memory means 2 for every mesh of a rectangular region in a comparatively broad range. Place name data and the like are stored in a detailed mesh place-name-list memory means 3 for every mesh of a relatively detailed rectangular region for map data. A display means 5 displays the present position estimated in the means 1 and the map data which are read out of the means 2 on a display means 6. The place name which is taken 4 out of the means 3 is displayed on the display 6 as the name of the region. |
