The device comprises a means 5, 6 for uncoupling a butterfly valve 1 for adjusting the flow rate of air taken into the engine from an accelerator pedal 4 at low loads. In this range of low loads the flow rate of air taken in is then adjusted by means of a solenoid valve 19 controlling an air duct 11 which is parallel to the one controlled by the butterfly valve 1. A specific control law of the solenoid valve 19 is set by a computer 20. Advantageously the solenoid valve 19 and the duct 16 are also used for adjusting the air flow rate at idling speed. <IMAGE>
