PURPOSE: To make it possible to easily obtain potable water by a filter device consisting of the exo-polysaccharide producing gram-negative bacteria supported on a water-permeable material which has heat resistance and is not easily biodegradable. CONSTITUTION: A filter unit is formed of a flat tank member assembled on a movable supporting foundation 10. A culvert 12 exists in the lower part of the unit and a supporting medium 13 consisting of sand exists on the culvert 12. The porous water-permeable material which has the heat resistance and is not easily biodegradable is arranged on the supporting medium 13. The exo- polysaccharide producing gram-negative bacteria are included in the water- permeable material. The water to be treated is introduced into the upper part of the tank by an inflow pipe 18 and arrives at the culvert 12 through the filter device 14 and the supporting medium 13. The potable water is drawn out through an outflow pipe 19 attached with a valve.
