METHOD OF CONTROLLING AUTOMATIC/SEMIAUTOMATIC MECHANICAL TYPE VARIABLE SPEED GEAR

PURPOSE: To establish smooth gear shifting within the allowable speed difference range by sensing a gear meshing in the gear ratio selected in a transmission ratio and delaying re-engagement of the main clutch for a time proportional to the value of gear ratio. CONSTITUTION: A control unit 38 of a transmission 12 is input with signals from various sensors, processes them in conformity to the specified logical rules, and outputs the result to operators 30 and 34 of automatic/semi-automatic control type. The given order output signals include an order to disengage a main friction clutch 16 and an order to make skip up-shift of the transmission 12 at meshing with a new gear ratio E substituted with a gear ratio N from the previously meshing gear ratio PE. The gear ratio N takes a value one smaller than the difference value obtained by subtracting PE from E. Meshing with the current gear ratio E selected in the transmission is sensed, and re-engagement of the main clutch 16 is delayed for a time T proportional to N. Thus a smooth gear shifting is established within the allowable speed difference range between the engine speed and input shaft speed.
