In the production of notched pins, the notches are produced by three notching tools offset by 180@ relative to one another. If the notched pin is composed of a certain grade of steel, notching beads are formed on both sides of the notches. However, if the notched pin is, for example, composed of a stainless steel or of a nonferrous metal, the entire area between the notches is deformed radially outwards by displacement of material, which is undesirable. In order to avoid this, forming jaws (8) act on the notched pin in the areas (3) between the notches during the penetration of the notching tools (5) into the notched pin, these forming jaws permitting the formation of a bead on both sides of the notches but keeping the notched pin at the original diameter in the areas (10) between the beads (2). <IMAGE>
