In known centrifugal pumps which have a pump shaft which is connected at one of its ends to a drive and at its other end carries at least one impeller, a sealing arrangement is provided for sealing the pump shaft. The delivery of the delivery medium is performed in such a way that the delivery medium is present at its highest pressure at parts of the sealing arrangement. This causes increased wear in the case of an abrasive delivery medium. The novel centrifugal pump has, by contrast, a delivery direction in the case of which the delivery is performed from a suction-side delivery compartment (22) to a pressure-side delivery compartment (29) which is arranged on the side of the pump housing (12) averted from the sealing arrangement (11). The sealing arrangement (11) is thus not exposed to a pressure load. The parts of the sealing arrangement (11) are arranged outside the suction-side delivery chamber (22).
