PURPOSE:To prevent the misregistering on a first printing position of a carriage by a method wherein, in an overlap printing mode, the carriage is slightly moved to conduct a first printing after being brought to a stop on a two-phase exciting position of a stepping motor near the first printing position and, thereafter, the carriage is moved to second and third printing positions successively to conduct printing. CONSTITUTION:A stepping motor is rotated rightward by the amount of one step, whereby a carriage 32 is slightly shifted rightward. As a result, the carriage 32 comes to a stop on a second stop position 2T corresponding to a one- phase exciting position of the stepping motor. Furthermore, a hammer drive solenoid 38 is driven to actuate a hammer on the second stop position 2T, whereby the carriage 32 conducts a first printing 1R and takes up a ribbon. In this manner, after a damping is completed on a first stop position 1T, the carriage 32 is so controlled as to be slightly shifted to a first printing position to conduct the first printing 1R. Therefore, the overlap-printed BOLD characters can be prevented from generating gaps or ununiform thickness.
