In a process for the production of aldehydes and alcohols by reaction of olefins in a liquid reaction medium with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a known cobalt carbonyl oxo catalyst or a known precursor for in situ preparation thereof, the catalyst being soluble in the reaction medium, at elevated temperature and at superatmospheric pressure in a reactor, wherein back-mixing of reactants and products takes place by circulation of the liquid reaction medium within the confines of the reactor, the circulation is substantially induced by introducing the liquid reactants into the reactor at a linear velocity of at least 2 m./sec., whereby momentum is transferred from the reactants to the liquid reaction medium. An example describes the production of nonyl aldehyde from an octene mixture. |
