NEW MATERIAL:A hydroxyalkylcysteine derivative expressed by formula I (A' is >=5C alkylene). EXAMPLE:S-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-L-cysteine. USE:Useful as an stable expectorant, having excellent expectorant action with hardly toxicity and side effect and capable of being orally or parenterally administered. PREPARATION:As shown in reaction formulas, a substituted alkyl alcohol expressed by formula II (X is halogen, tosyloxy or methanesulfonyloxy; A is alkylene) and cysteine expressed by formula III in an amount of 1-1.2mol based on 1mol compound expressed by formula I are used. pH is then adjusted to 9 with an alkali and the reaction mixture is reacted at ambient temperature or, as necessary, heated for 4-24hr in a solvent, such as water, to afford the compound expressed by formula I.
