PURPOSE: To make it possible to freely attachably and detachably connect the two parts of a guide wire to each other by inserting the connecting end of a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the one guide wire part into the tubular terminal member of the other guide wire part, by which one or both connecting end parts are deformed and are shrinkage fitted or friction fitted to each other. CONSTITUTION: The proximal end of the guide wire main part 1 inserted into a tubular member 19 has a small-diameter part 30. This guide wire has plural projections 31 which freely attachably and detachably shrinkage fit or friction fit the parts 11 and 12 of the guide wire system 10 to each other. The free end of the tubular member 19 of an extended part 12 is pushed onto a corrugated member 14 to extend the main part 11 in order to exchange a catheter. As the tubular member 19 is inserted into the corrugated member 14, each or both parts are deformed and the parts 11 and 12 are securely and freely releasably deformed to each other. The dilation catheter may then be drawn out of the patient's body along the extended guide wire system 10.
