PURPOSE: To make it possible to display various kinds of information at a sufficient contrast regardless of the light quantity of the incumference without being affected by visual angles and to obtain a high resolution, low dependence on temp. and a short control time by forming liquid crystal of ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal and providing a liquid crystal cell with a light scattering layer on the side of the cell toward an observer. CONSTITUTION: The activity display element consists of a glass plate 1a, transparent electrode 2a/oriented layer 3/liquid crystal 4/oriented layer 3/transparent electrode 2b/glass plate 1b. The respective transparent electrodes 2a and 2b are constituted to have a stripe form by lining up in the direction perpendicular to each other for the purpose of forming a matrix. The display element has a illumination means 5 for making linearly polarized light 8 incident on the inside of the glass plate 1a from the side and further the liquid crystal is a ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal 4. The liquid crystal cell is provided with the light scattering layer 6 on the side toward the observer. The illumination means 5 is adjusted so that the polarized light is made incident on the inside of the glass plate 1a from one side and that the entire boundary between the oriented layer 3 and the liquid crystal is irradiated. The image quality of a high resolution is, therefore, obtd., the working time is short and the multiplex rate is high. |
