PURPOSE:To obtain the element having an excellent appearance grade and productivity by curing a specific curable compd. under impression of a voltage between a pair of substrates with electrodes and immobilizing the phase sepn. of a liquid crystal material and the cured matter. CONSTITUTION:The curable compd. selected in such a manner that the refractive index of the cured matter obtd. therefrom coincides with either of the ordinary refractive index n0 or extraordinary refractive index ne of the liquid crystal material to be used and the smectic liquid crystal material are held in a uniformly dissolved state between a pair of the substrates with the electrodes and the curable compd. is cured by exposing of light, etc., under the impression of the voltage between the electrodes to immobilize the phase sepn. of the smectic liquid crystal material and the cured matter. The liquid crystal material and the curable compd. undergo the curing process from the uniformly dissolved state in this way, by which the smectic liquid crystal material and the cure matter are immobilized in the finely heterogeneous state; therefore, the distribution of the liquid crystal material and the cured matter is uniformized and the element having the excellent appearance grade and productivity is obtd. |
