Time averages of a plurality of functions f1(t), f2(t) . . . fk(t) may be calculated by comparing the voltage waveform representing each function fr with a random saw-tooth waveform Ar and assigning a binary value q = 1 or 0 to the comparison depending on whether fr#Ar or f2>Ar, a value Q = 1 or - 1 being accumulated in a reversible counter in accordance with the parity of #q. The total accumulated in the counter after a large number of such samples is proportional to the required time average. In particular, the cross correlation function F12(t1) of two functions f1(t), f2(t) is calculated by first combining the waveforms with random saw-tooth waveforms A, B produced by white noise generators RG1, RG2 and variable reference level generators SG1, SG2 (Figs. 6 and 11, not shown). The combined waveforms are then compared with fixed reference potentials V0, V1, the result of the comparison of f2(t)+B being sampled at times 0, t0, 2t0 . . . whilst f1(t)+A is sampled only at times 0, nt0, 2nt0 (n = 100). This is attained by the " AND " gate P, for sampling the comparison with V1 being controlled by pulses tB, ts whilst the " AND " gate P3 for sampling the comparison with V, is additionally controlled by the output pulse from a counter HCT (Fig. 7), when the counter is in its 0 state, which occurs for each 100 tB, ts pulses. The result of each sample with V0 is stored in a bi-stable device BS1 and compared with a hundred successive samples of V1 corresponding to a hundred delay values t1 = 0, t0 . . . 99t0 of the correlation function for t = 0. The process is then repeated for t = 100t0, 200t0 ... Gates P4 . . . P7 are enabled when f1>A, f2>B; f1#A1 f3#B;f1>Af2#B, f1#A1 f2>B respectively, a signal at P4, P5 adding one to the value in a counter BCT and at P6, P7 subtracting one. For each value of t, the counter BCT is successively fed at the appropriate time by a magnetic core matrix memory HS with the previously stored count for each of the 100 delay times 61, the modified value being reinscribed in the memory from which the final result may be read out at the end of the sampling. In a modification for calculating the correlation function F123(t1, t2) of three functions (Fig. 15, not shown). The third function is sampled after a fixed delay, t2, controlled by a device REG3, for each sample t1 = 0, t0 ... of the second function, the delay REG3 then being altered manually or otherwise to a second fixed delay. This process is repeated a hundred times for the required hundred values of t2. A logical circuit (not described) is included to determine the parity of #q. The correlator of Figures 6 and 7 may be adapted for calculation of the autocorrelation function, the mean value of a function, the R.M.S. of a function, the probability density and, when a regular saw-tooth waveform is used, the probability distribution. Suitable circuits for the comparator means and for providing the reference waveform are described.
