PURPOSE:To execute pattern understanding furthermore close to human's understanding by recognizing the shape, maneuverability and change of a pattern by a pattern shape recognizing means, a pattern movement maneuverability recognizing means and a pattern change recognizing means and allowing a pattern understanding integrating means to command an inference means to execute inference using knowledge in a knowledge base. CONSTITUTION:The pattern shape recognizing means 3 recognizes the shape of an input pattern such as a human's visual cell X-cell and the pattern maneuverability recognizing means 4 recognizes the movement of an input pattern such as a human's visual cell Y-cell. The pattern change recognizing means 5 recognizes the change of an input pattern such as a human's visual cell W-cell as information. The pattern understanding integrating means 6 allows the inference mechanism 8 to execute inference using the knowledge of the knowledge base 7 on the basis of the recognized results of said three recognizing means 3 to 5 and leads out an integrated pattern understanding result. The obtained pattern understanding is constructed to a sentence or the like to be understood by a human.
