The invention relates to a piston with reciprocating rectilinear motion. This piston includes two opposite hydrodynamic pads provided laterally on either side of the piston facing alternately loaded regions 14, 15 of the internal wall 13 of a cylinder 2 liner 3 in which the said piston 1 is capable of moving translationally, the hydrodynamic pads 11, 12 respectively including an external surface 16, 20 which is inclined with respect to the internal wall 13. The invention is characterised in that the respective external surfaces 16, 20 of the two aforementioned hydrodynamic pads 11, 12 are asymmetric with respect to the longitudinal geometric axis X of the piston 1, whereas they respectively have a shape which is adapted to the direction of displacement of the piston 1 in order to give rise to optimum hydrodynamic lubrication between the hydrodynamic pads 11, 12 and the internal wall 13 of the liner 3 of the cylinder 2.
